Siblinghood and Perceptions Around Autism | Project

Siblinghood and Perceptions Around Autism is a three-part design project based on personal experiences in Singapore, growing up with a sibling diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, commonly abbreviated as ASD. ASD is understood to be a spectrum disorder, where each person with autism is different. Each individual requires varying levels of support needs.
Consisting of an infographic poster, a sibling hood quiz and an interactive journal, each stage is crafted to ease viewers into understanding the topic better. More details of each part will be listed below.

This project aims to give viewers an understanding of individuals diagnosed with ASD, and siblinghood with them. Throughout the project, stigmas are addressed, and different points of views are also given from other individuals who have a sibling with autism to help viewers understand that spectrum.
PART 1 /  INFOGRAPHIC POSTER
This infographic poster is designed to give audiences an easy time reading a broad overview of perceptions of autism in Singapore, through visuals that correspond to the information listed. Statistics are based off quantitative surveys distributed amongst youths with siblings and secondary resources and studies.
PART 2 /  THE SIBLING SHENANIGANS: SIBLING QUIZ
A sibling relationship classification quiz aimed to encourage viewers to reflect on their own sibling bond before leading them to the journal. Questions, answers and results were created after extensive research on the types of sibling relationship in research papers, understanding reasonings behind provided questions and types of answers, and trials to ensure the functionality and accuracy of the test.

By introducing different sibling types, I hope to instil a sense of relatability by introducing in part 3 my own type of sibling relationship, and show that my sibling experience does not fall outside widely categorised sibling types just because my sister has ASD. This is aimed to facilitate understanding similarities and differences areas of siblinghood with a sibling with ASD, as compared to other sibling relationships.

A whiteboard, and marker bundled with a whiteboard eraser, is put at the back of the book and can be easily taken out/put back to facilitate viewers' quiz taking.
Feel free to take the quiz here!
PART 3 /  SIBLING HOOD AND PERCEPTIONS AROUND AUTISM: INTERACTIVE JOURNAL
This is a 44 page journal containing not only my personal experience, but also a lot of content from:

1. Experiences from two others who also have a sibling with ASD
2. Interactive elements that simulate the learning experience of resources designed for individuals with autism, and other fun activities related to sibling hood
3. The development, over the years, of support and resources catered to individuals with autism in Singapore (more scarce in the early 2000s, but now there is more support in Singapore, with policy changes and a more widespread understanding of ASD)

This was done in hopes that through sharing how me and my family learn about and grow with my younger sister, viewers may learn some new things, and be less afraid of
approaching individuals with ASD.

*Note: PECS and How Big Is My Emotion are tools that my younger sister has used in the past. The icons used in PECS were taken from my sister's actual PECS book, and the activity and icons were not created by and do not belong to me. The activity 'How Big Is My Emotion' was not devised by me.
